Dang chemistry. I dunno whether these were chromed seventy years ago when they were new but I certainly do not expect to find a nice chrome finish underneath all that burnt crud. So I guess I'm not afraid of using ammonia. Heck...it might be best if it does eat off all the chrome.

Then again, oven cleaner ought to work.
