I agree with Rick White here. best early engine I ever had on a budget was a 2.4 L E engine with webers, and a 901 box with 69 T gearing, It was more fun than a barrel of monkeys up to 125 mph!! Car was a 69 Targa. E cams for a street/ track comprmise.
