Great then and now photo of British soldiers with local inhabitants outside wrecked shops in Caen on 9 July 1944. The battle for Caen lasted just under two months and was so vicious that 73% of the city was destroyed and it is estimated 3000 local people; children, women and French civilians, died. It sounds much like current events. War is hell.
