A taste of the 70s

One of my fond childhood memories was going to McDonald's with my grandparents in the 70s, my mom and dad would never take us. Back then the fries were amazing as were the hot apple pies. Sadly, the modern day versions are pretty lame, like everything is now. It was some time in 1992 that McDonald's switched to the version of apple pie sold today.

But a little while ago I learned that there is a place on Earth that still makes apple pies like they did in the 70s and 80s, deep fried. That place is considered a paradise by many, Hawaii. Yes, Hawaii, and a few other places around the world, you can get old school apple pie goodness.

There are a few Pelicans living in HI, one being our very own WPOZZZ, Bryan. I asked him if he was game to get me 10 of these devils and send them to me, happy to pay for everything and then some.

Box arrived Yesterday. First, we all know what a great community we have here and people like Bryan really make it what it is. Not only did he go out of his way to get the pies and then ship them, he added in some Hawaiian cookies and coffee. And when asked for his paypal address to send $, he just replied "enjoy." At least I have his return address on the box.

And without further adieu, here are my first two pies. With fresh peanut oil and tallow (cow fat) I deep fried them as God intended. They were AMAZING and instantly transported me back to Middletown, CT in the 70s. Some memories of sitting with my grandparents and brother and sister flooded in. And to make it a truly authentic experience, I slightly burned my mouth carefully biting into one of the piping hot (375º) halves, just for old time's sake. Thank you Bryan!
