I worked in a Popeyes Fried Chicken in Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, VA in 1986. We had apple pies that were deep friend and were just like the McD's pies. We'd then coat them in cinnamon and sugar (not sure if McDs did that or not. They were very tasty, and highly likely to remove skin from your mouth from the lava hot filling.
We also had a guy whose only job was making biscuits. All of the biscuits were essentially from scratch and always awesome. We'd occasionally steal a raw biscuit, separate it into several smaller bits of dough, and then deep fry them and coat in cinnamon and sugar. Freakin spectacular!
