Anyway, couple of questions on this: - One of the cylinders popped up about an inch after I pulled the head . Do I need to worry about the integrity of the cylinder base gasket?
- With the cam towers still torqued to the heads is there any risk of the seals between them failing during handling and machining?

David,
There are no sealing rings between the cam tower and the cylinder heads. But there are sealing ring/s between the cylinder head/s and cylinder/s. After you removed the barrel nuts from the cylinder head studs, you can not
RE-USE the sealing ring/s. You need to replace them (CE rings).
With motor on an engine stand, you could repair the exhaust studs by removing the heat exchangers or headers and use the correct exhaust stud jig (8-mm). Why did you disassemble the motor if you just need to repair the exhaust studs? Got some pictures to share with us? Thanks.
