On car batteries: I can't recommend a brand in the US but IME it's best to buy the best you can afford.
(EDIT: Especially if it's your wife's car)
That doesn't mean an Oddesy or Optima. Both of these batteries may be great but they're complete overkill for most people.
4+ years is the norm for me but I don't hesitate to change them when needed.
- I also carry a small Ni-cad starter battery for emergencies that's been really handy/useful.
