We use these a lot. Expiration dates matter, IME they lose efficacy after about a year (don't get as warm/don't last as long as fresh). Pack a couple spares, they're cheap.
If you really need something dead-nuts reliable and long-lasting, I
love my Zippo refillable hand warmer ($15 from Amazon). Gets and stays (12+ hours) really warm. Buy some replacement burners at the same time, you'll be glad you did.
