We brought in an old gelding ten tears ago, former small time race horse, hunter jumper, schooling horse that was breaking down. The former owner makes her living with horses and it was either us or something less pleasant.

He was 25 then.

My wife trail rode with him for a few years then he became a yard ornament...a great, wonderful yard ornament but he hasn't been ridden in five years. Some days we just let him out of his stall and he eats the grass around the farm. He never leaves.

We all love him but his time is drawing near. He is now 35 and has trouble keeping weight, stumbles a bit more than he should.

So, next week the vet comes and we'll figure out the inevitable.
