Tires for 5.5J x 15 Fuchs on '73 911
Hello All,
Now that the engine on Phoenix has been rebuilt and is reliable, I’m driving more and more frequently and regularly. When checking tire pressures recently, I thought I’d have a look at the tire mfg. date and wow, they are 10.5 years old! While the tread life is still fairly good, I’m concerned the tire compound may have degraded after all these years. Unfortunately there do not seem to be many options for my exact tire replacement and what there is seems to be all all-season tires. After searching here quite a bit and not making real progress, I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with the tires I have been able to find? Details are as follows:
Original tires:
• 185/ 70/ R15
Current set-up (for the past 10+ years):
• Rims: 5.5Jx15 (original to car)
• Tires: 205/ 60/ R15 91H Michelin Pilot Sport Exalto (the new version of this is not made in this size)
• Torsion bars: 21mm front / 27mm rear
• Engine Torque: 195 ft. lbs at the wheel (the 205’s are letting loose a bit under spirited acceleration)
• Use: primarily street with a few autocross/ track days (in green groups)
What I’ve been able to find:
205/ 70/ R15 / 96W…. original size though will the taller sidewall hurt cornering?
• Vredestein Sprint Classic grand touring summer
205/ 65/ R15 …. slightly shorter though all are all season tires?
• Vredestein Quatrac 94H… all season
• Vredestein Hitrac 94H… all season
• Michelin Defender T+H 94H ... all season
• Yokohama AVID Ascend LX 94H… all season
205/ 60 / R15 / 96W…. current size on car
• Vredestein Quatrac 91V… all season
• Yokohama AVID Ascend LX or GT 91H… all season
• Hankook Kinergy PT H737 91H
205/ 55/ R15 / 96W…. is this getting too low of a profile? Harsher ride? Speedo impact?
• Yokohama Fleva V701 88V Ultra High Perf.
• Kumho ESCTA PS31 88V Ultra High Perf.
• Kumho ESCTA 4X II 88V Ultra High Perf.
• Vredestein Sprint = 88W Grand touring Summer
Any thoughts?
