It's interesting. I've known about and seen cicadas all my life. We had them in Florida, and Virginia, and when I lived in Japan, there were cicadas, and they all seemed about the same. I think they have always been ~1.25-1.5" long (body) and probably ~.5-.75" wide, and they all made the same loud buzzing noise.
Last year we moved to a rural area west of Houston. I started hearing this weird noise, and eventually identified the noise as the noise of the "giant cicada" which is quite different from a regular cicada noise. Unfortunately, I've never seen a giant cicada.
But, I've seen two tiny cicadas, and the second type was today, and was even smaller than the first.
This is the first small cicada that I saw. It's a bit under 1" long (body) and ~1/3" wide.
This is the one that I saw today. It's just under 0.5" long and ~0.25" wide. With the wings the whole thing is less than an inch long.
