I think I've only been late for class on the first day when the class is in some random building that isn't easy to find (ASU).
I've also been to some 700 level classes that no one showed up until exactly the start time. I thought that was rude and would be a few minutes early just not to be overly awkward...
Classes are political though. Impressions are everything. Smile, head nod, be polite, don't ask questions with some (schit) professors as they see it as challenging them and grade harder later. Others that care welcome questions (even redundant ones). Political.
As for attendance. LOL in a lecture hall of 200+. The only things that some professors do to take attendance was random pop quizzes. Physical chem at ASU was like that. Want to see 100 kids napping every lecture...
