Thanks Ted - it is like another planet here in a way! I don't know why you couldn't also have the same plants in your locale.
In another part of the yard, a Cycad called
Dioon spinulosum and to it's right a young palm called
Satakentia liukiuensis (native to Japan). Second photo is what they look like when mature.....
