I made this mistake. When we bought the house, I noticed some damaged shingles on the roof of the garage. The seller wouldn't fix them, but I asked them the brand and name so I could match them myself, since I knew they had replaced some while they owned it. They got the name totally wrong, I opened the pack, not even close. But it's the back side of the house, can't see it from the street, so I replaced them anyway. I should do another spot where the satellite dish was, but I need to bring a taller ladder.
I talked to a roofer, and he says there's a guy he works with who can identify the brand and color from just a single torn shingle. A shingle savant.
