Absolutely true. Years ago ('01 dot bomb) I got laid off and temporarily took a job in a game room attached to a bingo hall. Occasionally, the bingo hall would have a vehicle as "grand prize." They got a HUGE turnout for this. I don't believe they ever actually gave the vehicle away because the winner could never afford the sales tax. They always had an "alternate" cash prize that was generally a much lower value than the vehicle (which were never high end cars to begin with).
