That mirror attachment is certainly odd, never really liked it. But Chris, how on earth did it loosen enough to fall right off?!!
If you drilled a small hole in the posts you could maybe add a bit of safety wire from one post, into the door, and back out again to the other post, just enough to hold it and save you from another poopy roadside adventure.
