If you drilled a small hole in the posts you could maybe add a bit of safety wire from one post, into the door, and back out again to the other post, just enough to hold it and save you from another poopy roadside adventure.

I should clarify, here, that I REALLY LIKE the mirror bases you have and they are a great product.
I don't care for the factory mirror attachment mechanism which they've emulated.
After thinking more about the tether I'm going to say a tiny drill bit, two tiny holes, and 6 or 8 inches of fishing line would be the ticket.
