We used to have have to ship our RC-30 Wild aerial camera system and film backs off to be cleaned, lubed, then onto the USGS to be calibrated. They weight in at 450 pounds. Yea, a big camera. We had the custom shipping cases that they came in when new, so we put them on a nice new pallet, and used the strapping gun to pull them down tight. We also had ratchet straps. The cases also had a Shock meter sticker. Mythbusters used those a lot, and it would show if the pallet were subjected to a high G load, like getting dropped. We usually ended up using FedEx Freight. There was just one guy in North America that was factory authorized to clean and lube the system and he was in Canada. Shipping insurance was something we had to get on the system with the Inland marine policy. We paid $490,000 for the camera system, and it always made the trips to Canada and Colorado then back to us with no issues. It was only $20,000 to get it cleaned and calibrated.

Bottom line, only FedEx freight could handle it and make us feel like we had a chance of getting it all back in perfect condition. We called several other freight companies, and they all had issues.
