I guess Ferrari gambled that Sainz’ tires could potentially fail before the end of the race, so that trying to hold 3rd Place would end up with a DNF, versus a late pit (and 5 second penalty) put him in a guaranteed but lower points position?
But regarding pit strategy - if the radio communications were in real time with what we saw on TV, where Sainz was passing Perez and Ferrari told Sainz to pit - that’s just stupid, and inattention to the actual race needs to be addressed by the team if they expect to maximize their points and position finishes through the rest of the season.
