Something I haven’t seen mentioned yet is you can drive from abq to Santa Fe via hwy 14. It’s much more interesting than the I-25 quick shot. Sandia crest (10.000’ overlook over the city) is a side trip off hwy 14. Madrid is a small and quirky tourist stop on the way to Santa Fe.
Also not mentioned yet is Pecos natl. monument, and the road up to cowles. Similarly, the drive up to the Santa Fe ski basin offers amazing vistas and nice walks at the top. Spa 10,000 waves is along that route.
I wouldn’t stress too much over the abq crime comments on here. They are not wrong, but the pachucos tend to mostly pick on each other. Frankly, I find them more fun to be around than the self important artists, pretend cowboys and snippy effiminate waiters in Zhannnta Fay
