I think that's got to be more about how the towel/material has been treated than the type of cotton. I know that the strands of Egyptian cotton are longer (and thinner?) but I don't think that would have much impact on absorbancy. I do know that certain things when new suck at absorbing, but then after a couple of washes, that usually changes.
