There are some videos on the web showing exact these scenarios: Small fires still in the phase of beginning, are the preferred application for these small/tiny gas extinguishers. Of course - a full burning car will be lost when you only got one of those units...
The charm of them is that they won't pollute the whole area in case of a small fire. And most fires starts small and mostly you're getting aware by smell (electrical smell or burning fuel smell) or a bit smoke.
If the fire reiggnites or is getting more and more bigger and then a "real" powder fire extinguisher for cars is the unit of choice in this moment.
At the end you want to bridge the time until the firemen arrive to the site.
I also have a battery cutout switch installed in the car, more intended for longer sitting times or if I'm working at the car rather than for emergencies, but then it's also quite helpful.
