From what little information I have heard, he was on the initial test drive in front of the shop that had re-installed the fresh engine, and a fire started in the engine bay. I know he kept a small CO2 extinguisher in the car, but it was of no use.
From a grainy cell phone picture a friend took, the car went up quickly and only a small bit of the front of the car is left.

It may start as a small fire, but a small extinguisher is often not enough. Neighbor now has a lot of thinking to do, as I don't think Hagerty's check is gonna bring this back.
I'm always a bit paranoid since my magnesium engine and tranny can't be put out once they start burning. Way back in the '70's when I spent a day at fire training school, the only way they put out the magnesium fire was to bury it in sand to smother it. They said water would only make it worse due to the intense heat releasing hydrogen to further add to the fire.
