And what wasn't stored there was much of the nation's store of silver. As copper was critical for the larger effort in WW2 Project Y "borrowed" the silver that it needed for the cyclotrons (huge electromagnetically driven particle accelerators) used in Oak Ridge for uranium enrichment.
It was returned to Ft Knox after the war.
