But I can't wrap my head around your "problem", Otter.

I don't see why since the check valve assembly has already become loose from the pump why you couldn't just spin the pump off the check valve then use a wrench on the flats of the check valve and a wrench on the cap nut to get things undone and move forward in getting the job done.

I'm sure you wouldn't be able to clamp the high pressure hose polyamid line at the banjo fitting, but don't see why that would be an issue anyway whether or not things went smoothly changing out the fuel pump or with problems. If you are worried about residual pressure in the system, then why not crack open a fitting at the fuel filter or accumulator?

I think the drafting "leader" in the text on the photo of the OP's photo is a bit short as to which "nut" he is trying to hold. I should think the "nut" he needs to hold is not the body of the pump (per his leader) but the flats on the check valve assembly where it threads into the pump.
Yeah, it's doable, but on Saturday evening when I had a little bit of time and thought I could finish the job, it was enough of an obstacle that I ran out of time and haven't had time since. I did already release system pressure.

Now I'm not sure I even have the pump I was supposed to get, and I'd rather not do the job twice. I don't know the p/n of what I have.
