That “body in white” claim started out in Road and Track article, if I recall correctly. It has since been repeated by countless others. I think it’s in the Paul Frere books as well.

If you send your car to RUF to get modified, or to one of their dealers back in the day, you didn’t get a different VIN. I went to their Chicago dealer back in the 1980s or early 90s, to look at a BTR. Didn’t end up buying it.

Like I said, I’ve never seen one without a Porsche VIN. I’ve looked at more than a few, I know people that own them.
