At the 2022 US Open (tennis) Tomljanović ended the WTA career of Serena Williams, who had previously announced that this US Open would be her final tournament. Tomljanović defeated Williams on Friday, September 2nd in a hard-fought 3rd round match (7-5, 6-7, 6-1) which, at 3 hours 5 minutes, was the longest match Serena had ever played. The final game was a 22-point marathon in which Serena saved five match points before succumbing.
