The same thing happened in the Pacific when Allied fighters met Zeros. You have to learn your opponent's strengths and weaknesses and use your own strengths to exploit any advantage.
Also in Vietnam, US fighters were ham strung by rules of engagement which forbade them from launching beyond visual in most scenarios, negating the advantage their missiles would have provided.
The work around was the Navy's Top Gun school.
