People are idiots, and many/most don't understand how thermostats work. And many/most DGAF about anyone but themselves. When I rent a place, I set the HVAC so I am comfortable (usually 72º-75º). When I leave, I set it back to where it was when I arrived.
There are a lot of folks that think that if the AC is set to 72º, but will only cool the house to 75º*that maybe it'll do a better job if they set it to 65º or 60º. I don't know what they think, but they do.
