A guy I know built a bicycle with an outrigger for abandoned-rail riding. This was ten years ago or so. He used it for a while and lost interest.
A gas powered rail riding thingy would definitely get you farther, faster.
I've watched a few videos over the years, seemed like fun, sort of, but didn't interest me enough to find a situation to go out and do it. I'm sure if abandoned mines interest a person then this sort of thing would be a boon to getting to the mineshaft, because obviously a lot of these abandoned railroads were used to move minerals.
