The last one I installed had a poor signal too. The reason in my case, was that the cam/crank sensor housing didn't put the sensor right in the middle of the crank trigger wheel. It was offset a little to one side. I had to elongate the hole slightly in the sensor mount so that it could be rotated in the distributor mounting hole. After doing this, we had a perfect and strong crank signal and it's run great ever since.
Also, don't forget to make sure you have a sensor gap of approx 1mm. (no more)

Worth checking just in case.
