I was stationed at the atomic power site just outside Saratoga Springs NY and it was a US Navy training site. In the winter once we'd get the first good snow the fire house down the road from where I lived would break out a snowplow and smooth out a nice flat section and then flood it with fresh water. Usually took a day or two for freezing through and then they would run a siren to let everybody know the "skate place" was ready. We'd ice skate and then the kids would get out their Bobby Hull hockey sticks and the fun would start. We would sit in the side door of my Dodge van, drink beer and watch the fun!
