Common wisdom is to not store the mags loaded, but I've heard a lot of folks, I think including Jeff Higgins, say that they've stored mags fully loaded before with no issues after many years. My guess is that it's one of those things that could happen, but it's probably very rare, and may be due to a defect or poor metallurgy or something.
Why wouldn't you store ammo in a safe. That seems like a great place if you've got room. And if the house ever burns down and the fire dept is there, they don't have to worry about getting shot, because the ammo is not going to shoot through the safe.
