After 50 years I'm still excited every time I turn the key to start my old 911.
Started my Porsche fun in '73 with a 1965 Light Ivory 356SC Cab I purchased for $1500. No, I'm not missing a few $0s. It was an absolute blast of a car to drive. Yes, it sure needed love, but that was one of its endearing qualities; it wasn't perfect so I could drive it like I stole it. Found a '71 sunroof 911T coupe needing some love and bought it also for $1500. Took a few years to get it on the road but had fun getting it there and met a few likeminded folks along the way and some are still friends today. Next up was an 82 SC Targa in Chiffon White with brown interior followed by a Alpine White 86 coupe. Then a '87 Ultramarine Blue Metallic with linen/black & blue tri-color interior. This car was a stunner! Bought a 944S2 Coupe all white, exterior, interior and D90s. Best handling car I ever owned, also darn reliable. Everything still worked as new after driving it 175k miles in 7 years of daily driving. 2010 I brought home a neglected 1973.5 Targa that had been languishing in a shed for 9 years from the mountains of Pa. Most of the interior had been sitting 'around' and the engine was out. Rust was negligible, but still took me 10 years to get it drivable. No plans of selling.
I feel so fortunate to have owned these cars back when they were just used cars and affordable. I too, am not all that turned on by the later models, but in the end, sadly, may not have much say in the situation. But then again, I do love Porsche cars.
