We usually used a stick or rock (or hoe if handy) if they were out in the open. Shells were too expensive to waste on something we did not eat (or was not a person that could potentially shoot back). I only shot copperheads that were in places where they could escape (in a rockpile or under a big overhanging log). They were pretty quick. I used a shotgun with lead bird shot because there was little risk of ricochet (lots of rocks).
Our startled neighbor shot a rattlesnake on top of the wood cookstove in his kitchen with a shotgun and it made a mess.
