Some say they smell fear. I don't know if there's a pheromone or what. Some dogs are just azzholes. I don't generally fear any animal, but some dogs still bark and get excited.
I feel like you should have used your bike as a shield between you and the dog. I wouldn't have intentionally hit the dog with my bike but I wouldn't feel bad if it did get hit by the bike if it was charging.
A lot of small dog owners don't control their dogs because "it's so small and sweet," so the small ones get away with stuff that a big one wouldn't.
Sorry about your experience which I'm sure helped to cement your fear. Yep, their teeth can be darn sharp.
