I love animals almost as much as you.
The dog bit him and broke the skin. The dog needs to be taught that is not OK. You can fend a dog off with your foot without hurting the dog, sort of mock kicks. I'd have used the bike as a shield so the dog wouldn't have been able to get close enough to bite me.
You can "kick" a dog without kicking a dog, if you get my drift. If it's a "strange" dog that's attacking you, get it's attention. I'd never try to actually injure the dog, just get it's attention and convince it to keep it's distance. If it was a dog that seemed intent on bodily harm, and seemed like it had a good chance PB, GSD, whatever, I'll escalate as needed. I REALLY love animals. They are on the whole, better than people. I've found copperheads in our yard, and I've never killed one, but have gently relocated them.
But if I felt like it came down to a "them or me," I'm going to win every time. If something is attacking you, yeah, you may want to do great harm to the owner, but I'm going to ensure that I stop the attack first, then worry about the owner.
It's all about perspective. It's not unusual for people to say "I could kill her for saying that" or other similar things, but most of those things almost never happen (1 in a million or maybe 100 million or billion?). If I say "I'd kick/launch the dog" I mean I'd keep from getting bitten. If the dog will not take "no" for an answer, I'll escalate until it does. If I had to kill a dog to keep from being killed, that would REALLY suck, but eventually once all other options were exhausted, that's what would happen.
