While we're on the subject I have a few questions about temp guages and senders.

So I just had a mildly unpleansant experience with Palo Alto Speedometer here in Palo Alto. They were supposed to make me a custom temperature/fuel guage combo for my 914-6 with proper connection to my 3.2 liter Carrera engine's oil temperature sending unit. They screwed up the order in a lot of different ways. But I got my combo gauge back today. Unfortunately I dropped it off with them March 21, 2003. That's right, it took them almost one year to finish this job. To their credit, they deeply discounted the work, but you know, it still doesn't quite make up for the poor service.

As for my question:

Oil Sending Unit on 3.2 Liter: PAS failed to set up the temperature guage to properl connect to the oil temperature sender on my 3.2 liter engine. Instead they provided a new sender to install in the block. The problem is, I'm not sure now where the sender goes.

The Bentley Service Manual seems to be saying (on page 102-2, and on page 130-4 [part # 16 in the diagram]) that the temp sender is right next to the pressure sender on the back of the engine, to the right of the v-belt pulley. This seems to be coroborated by the engine lubrication diagram on page 170-2 that has the oil temp and pressure senders together.

But then the Bentley manual contradicts itself. On page 102-6 Bentley calls what I thought was the temp sender, the "oil pressure warning light switch." And then on page 170-6 Bentley, again, calls the little unit next to the pressure sender the "oil pressure warning switch." So I'm not sure if its a temp sender or a oil pressure light switch.

To make matters even more confusing, Bentley sometimes (see page 102-6) calls the little sensor at the front of the engine, near the flywheel and right next to the oil temp thermostat, the "oil temperature sender."

Any help please?

New Temp Sender. As a second issue, the sender that PAS gave me is different from all these senders. The sender is a VDO sender with the number 5.02, on one side and the sender number, 801/1/26, on another side. Will this sender fit in the temp sender location on my 3.2 liter block?

Thanks in advance,

Douglas
