I agree with that. My '87 944 N/A does the same on the speed sensor harness. It was missing the connector bracket at the back of the cam tower. I installed the bracket and secured both reference and speed sensors and that seems to have solved the problem.
I've replaced the complete speed and reference sensor harness on several 944/924S and they always start easier and run better after.
