A fairly common problem on VW’s back in the day was the brass dump tube would fall out of the carb and be ingested and rattle around in the engine. I watched one time as a buddy of mine, next door in the BMW shop, cured one by racing the poor little VW engine at about 3K RPM, rattling away until it came spitting out the tail pipe!
