One of the many reasons we love our house is all the plumbing is on inside walls. The kitchen is next to the insulated garage, and the garage never gets below 40 even when we were below zero for days. Full insulated and sheetrocked walls, and insulated garage doors.
The bathrooms all have plumbing on inside walls. The only pipe we have on an outside wall is the supply for the toilet in my garage bathroom, and the bathroom out there is part of the central heat and air, so it stays about 65 degrees in the coldest weather.
The outside faucets are on long sealcocks, with automatic air breaks so they drain fully. We have never had a problem with freezing pipes. We are also lucky that there is an assisted living center about 4 blocks from our house. Hospitals and nursing homes and assisted living centers are on high priority for getting electricity restored, and our neighborhood has all underground utilities.
