If one truly likes art, and collects art, it is a great investment. One of the locally owned insurance companies was owned by a guy that loved art, real art, not the modern art stuff, but the art anyone looks at and says that is art. He used company funds to buy artwork for his office, and ended up spending some bucks to have the HVAC system brought up to museum quality levels so the art was kept at ideal temps and humidity.
He was a customer of ours, and we were often tasked with going to his office, and shooting a 4x5 transparency of a painting. It had to be dead on square, with zero reflections, and match the color of the painting. The transparency was filed with the insurance company.
When he got to the age he was ready to sell the entire company, the artwork was worth many millions. He ended up giving golden parachutes to all his long time valued employees. He shared the wealth, and retired rich. He had no kids. His art investment was worth more than a large insurance company.
