They just don’t work as effectively as overhead vent hoods. Steam, smoke, and all that naturally wants to rise.
The house I’m in now was originally fitted with something like that, I intercepted the duct in the wall behind the cooktop and plugged in a normal range hood.
It depends on what you cook and how much of it, it might be adequate for some things but nowhere near adequate for others.
