The house I’m in now was originally fitted with something like that, I intercepted the duct in the wall behind the cooktop and plugged in a normal range hood.
It depends on what you cook and how much of it, it might be adequate for some things but nowhere near adequate for others.

Agree totally. Ditched an expensive Dacor downdraft the minute we moved in here for a relatively inexpensive zline 40 in hood.
