V8 conversion alternators
Those of you with Chevy conversions - what alternators are you running with or what do you recommend (model & year GM)? I've got an extra 55 amp (spare unit for my '68 Chevelle) that fits my brackets beautifully. But with all my accessories (dual fans, electric water/fuel pumps, stereo) I don't think it's going to cut it. It's not intuitively obvious if I can wire the stock 914 regulator to work with it either - there's some differences in the GM and 914 designs.
I haven't found much info out on the web on this. Are you using high output, one-wire alternators (built-in reg) and clipping the wires to the old regulator? Are you wiring the original dash warning light plus running a separate #10 ga. wire between battery and alternator? Using a high amp. alt. with old wiring looks like a fire hazard, especially after a jump start on a dead battery. Maybe a fusible link in there? Appreciate your help!
