My first 747 experience was in 1987 from San Francisco to London (even though my journey began in Texas). Pan Am and it was glorious.
Flight attendant came on intercom and said "folks, we are not full. Feel free to find a row to yourself and spread out". Decent food and free booze. My how times have changed. Now the only way to be comfortable is get in business or 1st class.
