Lying on resumes happened a lot before the internet was widely used. I worked with a guy in the 70's Dr. So and So who came on board at a diagnostics company as an expert in red blood cell active surface sites. Turned out that he lied on the resume, faked a diploma and was finally found out when an associate discovered a ton of plagiarism in one of his white papers. The school he claimed as alma mater never heard of him and a previous employer said "who?". Turns out that HR never vetted him. That's two job openings.
