We used to do background checks on all potential hires which, I would hope, would at least vet simple things like lying about graduating from a college you never attended. For me, the resume itself didn't really mean all that much, as after 2-3 interviews you would know whether the person knew their stuff or not. It's more about bringing someone onto the team that is serially dishonest - that's a non-starter for me. I'm talking about egregious falsehoods, obviously everyone embellishes a bit.
