So what would you call the persona of the Space Oddity? Back in the day Bowie and Space Oddity/Ziggy were the favs of the Homosexuals...they loved him..
I have always thought that early Bowie had a Dual quality to it...it was way over the line into schizophrenia

I don't doubt Richards doesn't mince words. I don't know much about him to have an opinion, though. Maybe he was upset with the close relationship (probably sexual) Bowie had with Jagger? I don't know. Or care. The original release of "Space Oddity" was in 1969 and was filmed in his short promotional movie
Love You Till Tuesday. I don't think the movie was released until 1984. "Space Oddity" starts at about 21:32:

My take is Bowie tried really hard to be a success in Rock and Roll and found it with his outrageous, androgenous characters. I think he broke ground for many, many other artists to follow in years to come. If he did suffer from schizophrenia, I think he was high functioning. There is history of that disorder in his family, I believe. What makes you think he was "way over the line" in his early career?
