The 38-35 round:
Shooting styles and stances were a bit different back then, and relatively low recoiling rounds like this were acceptable with that crescent butt because it was held against the bicep just below the shoulder, instead of the shoulder itself. It's an awkward way to shoot at first, but after a while you get used to it. I still don't find it more accurate or comfortable though. Some of the old ways weren't better.
